5 Tips for a Painless Vasectomy Recovery

Your body has just undergone a significant surgery, and jostling or additional emotional and physical stressors should be avoided. Avoid too much movement. This is your chance to spend three days lounging around with zero guilt!

Just because you're home, don't be tempted to jump in and help with chores or to get started on that household project that's been on your mind. Resist the urge! You'll be better off in the long run.

Dedicate the first 48-72 hours after your surgery to literally just sitting and lying around. Minimize walking (even within the house), and avoid lifting anything more than 10 pounds. Avoid strenuous activity for at least seven (7) days after vasectomy.

2. Ice Your Balls

Intermittent ice after vasectomy can significantly reduce swelling and pain. Use the Kiwi Kooler Ice Pack for the first 72 hours after surgery to apply controlled and targeted cooling to the scrotum. Apply for 20 mins on, 10 mins off to encourage blood flow. Be sure to buy a Kiwi Kooler Double Kit or Kiwi Kooler Care Package so there's a second ice pack in the freezer when the first runs out.

3. Wear Supporting Underwear

Even if you're normally a boxers kind of guy, it's critical for the first week after vasectomy to wear either tight underwear or an athletic supporter. This secures your genital area, prevents jostling, and prevents stitches from tearing or falling out. The Kiwi Kooler Deluxe Care Package includes our premium super-stretch supporting underwear designed to apply gentle and even support on your entire scrotum. It's all you'll need.

4.  Advil / Tylenol

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Advil) work in different ways to treat pain, and both can be effective after vasectomy. Consider using just the one you prefer, or in combination to maximize their effects. Always follow the labels and your doctor's instructions. Avoid blood thinners such as Aspirin (Bayer) or Naproxen (Aleve) which can cause complications after surgery.

5. Don't bathe right away.

To minimize chance of infection, wait 48 hours before showering, and 72 hours before having a bath. Avoid sweating by keeping your testicles cool and dry. Gently dry them with a towel if necessary. Change underwear every 24 hours.
